Karelian Bear Dogs

Family Friendly Breeders

Welcome to Rocky Mountain Karelian Bear Dogs! We are a family living in central Montana. We have owned KBDs for three years. When we got our first Karelian Bear Dog we fell in love with our dog's, loyalty, friendliness, energy, and eagerness to hunt and protect.

We love our Karelians and hope to share the love of these dogs with you! We are dedicated to finding loving homes for all our puppies. To learn more about us, go to the “About” section on our website!

About Us

Healthy Bloodline

Our Karelian Bear Dogs are purebred and they come from an ancestry of Finnish, and Swedish Karelian Bear Dog hunters. They are known for their aggressiveness towards unwanted predators and their gentleness towards owners and friends.

About Karelian Bear Dogs

The Pros and Cons of Karelian Bear Dogs

Pros:

  • Health- No health issues as a breed (ie. hip dysplasia, cancer, etc.) Of course, dogs are individuals and could possibly have a health problem but it is much less likely.

  • Highly intelligent- This can actually be good and bad. They learn things quickly, which is good for training but also use their intellect to figure out ways to escape and get into mischief.

  • Loyal and protective - Karelians love their families and look at them as fellow pack members. They want to be with you whenever possible and protect you. Although loyal to their entire family, they will single out one person as their favorite.

  • No dog smell - Unless wet a KBD does not have a dog odor.

  • Active - Karelians require a lot of physical and mental stimulation and this makes them ideal partners for hiking, running, and hunting. No more carrying your dog back to the car!!

  • Extremely friendly - These dogs love people and they are great with families.

Cons:

  •  Stubborn- Even though they learn things quickly, a Karelian will become stubborn and try to get away with not obeying. It is important that they are made to obey or it will get worse.

  • Digging- Digging is something that our dogs enjoy doing but more so when they are bored. This can be worked through with training but it can be a bit of a struggle.

  •  Barking- Karelians use barking as a means of warding off unwanted animals/people from their territory. If they have an animal treed, they will bark relentlessly until the animal leaves. They don’t have to bark needlessly but it is how they ward off predators so there is a balance in deciding what is allowed.

  •  Wandering and the “Come” Command- Because they were bred to go and hunt, Karelians struggle with the “Come” command. They can learn the command easily enough but the trick is getting them to obey if they are chasing an animal or something equally exciting. They also like to explore and wander so fencing is a good idea.

  • Assertive with dogs of the same gender- Karelians are “pack-minded” animals and if another dog of the same sex challenges or stands up to them, they will fight for position.

Bottom Line:

These dogs love people and are very friendly, they are great hunters, and are extremely loyal. They also need a firm, but gentle owner, to train them well. If you feel this is the dog for you, please contact us!
